We are delighted to announce the opening of HART's new art space in Kennedy Town! Located at Ground Floor of Cheung Hing Industrial Building, 12P Smithfield Road, this venue builds upon the success of our flagship program, HART Haus.
As our space’s debut exhibition, HART presents Saudade Chandelier (2023) by Andrew Luk, a hauntological cipher that captures the ancestral roots and unique landscape of Hong Kong. Now exhibiting at HART’s new art space, this sculptural installation is an assemblage of up-cycled Taobao chandelier components, oyster shells, temple pinwheels, and ancestral altar light bulbs.
Inspired by Hong Kong’s coastal location and proximity to water systems, Saudade Chandelier embodies the elemental rhythms of water, air, and light. Luk recalled childhood memories of exploring the coast and colonial defensive structures here in Kennedy Town. Previously exhibited at Blindspot Gallery in Wong Chuk Hang, the artwork now finds itself in another waterfront neighbourhood, serving as a poignant reminder of the city's bygone era for both neighbours and passersby.
According to the artist, Luk perceives “Kennedy Town used to be a sleepy area at the edge of Hong Kong Island. I remember climbing on rocks along the coast near the Sai Wan Swimming Shed, being fascinated by paved over squatter settlements that felt like the ruins of Pompei, and exploring old colonial defensive structures. I typically try to offer some context, but ultimately let the work speak for itself. Audiences deserve the power to form interpretations if they so choose. To me it communicates conflicting hopes and apprehensions, but also a level of care. By orienting historic change out on a long enough timeline it’s possible to mediate a reassuring perspective.”
Join us at HART G/F to explore the artwork's voice in a new environment, and to witness its sublime presence radiating in the dark.

About the Artist 藝術家簡介
Andrew Luk (b. 1988, New Jersey, USA) is a Hong Kong artist who works across a range of media examining the intricacies of the human experience as well as the myths and histories associated with civilisation building. Investigating the creases between binaries such as culture and nature, human and non-human, and the personal and the collaborative, Luk’s sculptures and installations explore utopian desires of perfection and their dystopian repercussions. His diverse practice is united through an exploration of ideological superstructures and their systems of expression — delicately tracing connections across disciplines, speculating on potential futures and revealing expressions of beauty, preservation and entropy.
Luk’s solo exhibitions include “Appropriate Responses for Featherless Bipeds with Broad Flat Nails” at chi K11 Art Museum (Shanghai, 2018). His works have also been shown at various group exhibitions including “New Beginnings” at Blindspot Gallery (Hong Kong, 2022); “Next Act” at Asia Society (Hong Kong, 2019); “Very Natural Actions” at Tai Kwun Contemporary (Hong Kong, 2019); “Serious Games” at HOW Art Museum (Shanghai, 2019) and “A Tree Fell in the Forest, and No One’s There” at the Power Station of Art (Shanghai, 2018). Luk is currently completing Masters at the Yale School of Art, USA.
